Thoughts on Nintendo: A [once] loyal fan’s take

Without proper introduction, let me explain to you why I think Nintendo is currently licking supreme pole. It’s been revealed by Mario mastermind, Shigeru Miyamoto, that E3 is no longer a convention targeted at core gamers. Let me fill you in on something, first: E3 used to be open to whomever had the cash to attend it. Since 2007, it’s been transformed into an invitation-only event. As a result, companies are presenting to a much smaller crowd. And let me tell ya, negativity is inevitable. They hate it as much as we do. But back on track, Miyamoto made it clear that E3 was to no longer be an opportunity to reveal [and promote] core games such as the Zelda and Mario series. He’s been quoted saying the following:
“[E3 is] an opportunity for [us] to introduce new concepts and new types of play that [we] intend to bring to the broader audience, particularly because of the media that gathers at E3 now.”
Alright. So what you’re saying is that the audience who’s made you what you are to this day doesn’t matter too much anymore. I understand that innovation is a matter of prime importance to Nintendo, but Jesus, come ON. The introduction of the Wii Motion Plus is anticlimactic in that the Wii controller was expected to have its features since day one. Now they’re going to [most likely] charge us for a feature that should have been included from the start? The fuck is that? And another Wii Sports? Another Animal Crossing? That’s just embarrassing. And Wii Music? It’s awful; everything is terribly laden with unpolished, pointless bullshit. I never minded Nintendo’s focus on a broad audience, but this is just ridiculous. I was asking myself if they were serious with all of this. The more I watch the videos about the “games” that were presented at this year’s E3, the more unbelivably pissed I get. I highly doubt Nintendo will go downhill from here, as their target audience will probably receive all of these announcements well. But the people that made Nintendo who they are…they’re the ones that are steaming with anger. It’s like a big ‘Fuck you’ from Nintendo. We get it: you can impress non-gamers in a mass market. But why does this mean that old fans are to be left in the dark? Because Nintendo is becoming full of themselves. They’re becoming too much of a business. They’re basking in all of this success from the Wii and keep on with it because the people who usually don’t play videogames are buying into their product. I don’t know what anyone else thinks about this, but I think that’s just fucked up.
Proclamation of all of this naysay about Nintendo from me is akin to a man talking shit about his [still pretty decently-looking] wife of 50 years — a previously long-standing love turned into fiery hatred. Even my friends were questioning me upon the subject. They couldn’t believe my disappointment and recent interest in Microsoft’s console. I’ve been a Nintendo advocate for just so long. Owning every major Nintendo console (aside from the SNES — Genesis was better) will prove this. Being a subscriber to Nintendo Power since volume 119 will prove this. Having a room that is disgustingly blanketed in Nintendo-related paraphernalia will prove this. I bought DDR: Mario Mix — and I hate DDR! I HAVE NINTENDO SHOES, FOR CHRIST’S SAKE. I’ve always been one to defend Nintendo against verbal assailants, but with the utter SHIT — yes, SHIT — Nintendo’s been putting out there for a good year and a half, supporting and rationalizing them is the last thing I feel like doing. So fuck you, Nintendo. You’ve done your damage and it’s going to take an overwhelmingly huge amount of work to get me past your smug rigmarole and back onto your shit-bound bandwagon. Your past is golden; your present is not.
Disappointed fan,
-Dan

To quote Penny Arcade’s take on Nintendo “We’re fucking rich, here’s some shit you don’t care about”. My hope for any good Wii games now lies with 3rd party dev’s with games like The Conduit. But really, the Wii is pretty much a dead platform when it comes to gamer games, at least for this year, which is really sad considering we got an absolutely fantastic effort from Nintendo with Metroid Prime 3, Mario Galaxy, and Brawl.

Well-put. I just don’t think they’ve got it in them anymore. They’re trying to be /too/ different. Galaxy and Brawl are great; I’ll give them that. But overall, I’m just unhappy with with them.

I can’t really remember the last game they have released I have loved. The only good part about the Wii now is the Virtual Console, where they brought in an import of MYSTICAL NINJA. I’ve only played the N64 game before and boy, I was VERY impressed with the SNES game in the series. 2 player classic RPG with platform elements. I recommend everyone who is tired with all the crap to go ahead and try it. Hopefully they’ll import the N64 game in the series. If word got around how awesome it was, hopefully Nintendo would keep importing and possibly bring the series to America. Now, THAT would restore my faith in Nintendo…that and Mega Man 9.
